Why watch this film?
An animated co-production between the United States and China, exclusive to Netflix, inspired by the 16th century Chinese novel "Journey to the West" (which, among other things, is deeply rooted in Chinese folk religion and inspired Dragon Ball's original incarnation). "The Monkey King" is essentially an adventure movie that follows its titular character on his journey to overcome a series of trials and thus find his place amongst the gods. Its frantic pace - especially in the third act - may be too much for less patient viewers, but younger audiences seeking a colorful and fun adventure will find what they're looking for here.

Plot summary
'The Monkey King' follows a charismatic Monkey and his magical fighting Stick on an epic quest for victory over 100 demons, an eccentric Dragon King, and Monkey's greatest foe of all -his own ego. Along the way, a young village girl challenges his self-centered attitude and shows him that even the smallest pebble can have a big effect on the world.

Here, director Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall) filters the conventions of these films through a black lens, with a cast led by names like Lakeith Stanfield, Alfre Woodard, David Oyelowo, Omar Sy, and Anna Diop, among others. The Book of Clarence follows a man who, aspiring to be someone in life, decides to capitalize on the popularity of Jesus of Nazareth for his own benefit. Through the biblical cliché, the film examines issues such as black identity, the distortion of faith by organized religions, and the very sense of goodness and compassion. It's somewhat uneven but nonetheless entertaining.
