With films like Shoplifters and Broker (among many others), Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda is a master at telling stories of complex morality, where the truth is never simple, and answers navigate through all shades of gray. Monster is another great demonstration of this (the film won Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival 2023). Its plot begins with a mother concerned about her son's strange recent behavior, and after investigating, she begins to fear that he is being abused by a school teacher. However, as the plot unfolds, we witness all the elements that complicate and entangle the truth hidden behind. Monster is the kind of film that deeply moves and invites reflection on the ways we relate to—and judge—those around us.

Shoplifters
Hirokazu Kore-Eda, director of 'Father and Son' and 'Nobody Knows', returns in an emotionally stirring and deeply human film, hallmark of the filmmaker's filmography. The story is about a low-income family living what appears to be a happy life on the outskirts of Tokyo - though they resort to small crimes to survive. Everything changes when they take in a lost girl, sharing what little they have in an act of dimensions bigger than they could imagine. The result of this mix is an engaging feature that combines humor and drama, also exploring themes such as unemployment, gentrification, and family love.
The Truth
Catherine Deneuve, one of the great stars of French cinema, is still active and delivering great performances, this time alongside another excellent French actress, Juliette Binoche. In 'La Vérité', Deneuve brings art to life and plays Fabienne, an artist who is aging and decides to write an autobiography that ends up displeasing her friends and confusing her daughter, a screenwriter (Binoche). An intriguing film with an excellent cast of women, another highlight is Ethan Hawke and the actress who plays Binoche's daughter, Clémentine Grenier. Directed by Hirokazu Koreeda ('Shoplifters'), he once again shows himself to be the ideal director for great family dramas.
Broker
Broker, directed by Kore-eda Hirokazu, is a heartwarming drama that explores the complexities of adoption and family. The film follows two brokers who sell orphaned infants to affluent couples, but their world is turned upside down when an infant's mother returns to ensure her child finds a good home. The trio embarks on a journey to find the right couple, building an unlikely family of their own. While the film skirts the edges of sentimentality, it is consistently grounded by Kore-eda's warm, tenderly melancholic approach. The performances are outstanding, particularly by Song Kang-ho and Gang Dong-won, who bring depth and humanity to their roles. The cinematography by Hong Kyung-pyo is stunning, capturing the beauty and complexity of the Korean landscape. The film's soundtrack by Jung Jae-il is also noteworthy, adding an emotional depth to the story. Overall, Broker is a must-see film that will leave a lasting impression on its viewers.

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
Downtown Owl
'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.
