The Maltese Falcon
Based on the namesake novel by Dashiell Hammett, "The Maltese Falcon" marks John Huston's (“The Treasure of the Sierra Madre”) directorial debut—and what a debut! This film, nominated for three Academy Awards (including Best Picture and Best Screenplay), is an essential mystery thriller in the repertoires of mystery fans or any cinephile in general, and it is considered one of the most representative examples of the noir films so characteristic of 1940s Hollywood. The whole cast is brilliant, but of course, nobody like the legendary Humphrey Bogart, who was launched to stardom as the typical rugged and cynical protagonist with this movie, long before "Casablanca".
The Asphalt Jungle
Under the direction of legendary John Huston (The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Maltese Falcon), this movie became a prominent reference of mid-20th century film noir. The Asphalt Jungle is about a criminal who, after being in jail, plans a million dollar jewel heist with the help of some specialists and a secret investor. However, as is usually the case in mid-century crime stories, there are betrayals, doubts, and moral dilemmas that eventually tear apart the plan. Beyond being a classic noir and part of Huston's filmography, The Asphalt Jungle stands out for Sterling Hayden's (The Godfather) lead performance and a small appearance from Marilyn Monroe, who, although not yet a legend, had already begun to stand out with her sixth career film.
The Misfits
At the end of her career, Marilyn Monroe was plagued by deep personal issues (including the decline of her marriage to playwright and screenwriter Arthur Miller), as well as a dependence on narcotics. These factors affected the filming of 'The Misfits', a movie that reunited her with director John Huston and which Miller had written for her to have a deeper dramatic role. This, however, was a source of conflict, as Monroe hated the fact that Miller had based Roslyn Tabor's character partially on her life. Nevertheless, despite the problems, Marilyn delivers one of the best performances of her career, as a newly divorced woman who impulsively decides to live with three men (Clark Gable, Eli Wallach and Montgomery Clift). Although it was a box office failure at the time, the film has been reassessed over time and appreciated for its empathy in portraying the profound melancholy, and the despair of its characters. 'The Misfits' was the last movie completed by Marilyn (and by Gable, her childhood idol). Due to her health issues, the actress was fired from the filming of Something's Got to Give and died of a barbiturate overdose two months later.

The Book of Clarence
Biblical epics in the style of Ben-Hur are so recognizable in classic cinema that they have been the subject of witty parodies (most notably, the also classic Monty Python's Life of Brian). Here, director Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall) filters the conventions of these films through a black lens, with a cast led by names like Lakeith Stanfield, Alfre Woodard, David Oyelowo, Omar Sy, and Anna Diop, among others. The Book of Clarence follows a man who, aspiring to be someone in life, decides to capitalize on the popularity of Jesus of Nazareth for his own benefit. Through the biblical cliché, the film examines issues such as black identity, the distortion of faith by organized religions, and the very sense of goodness and compassion. It's somewhat uneven but nonetheless entertaining.
