The Wachowski siblings redefined blockbusters and the use of special effects in action films, as well as presenting us with a plot that makes us question our role in the world, our interaction with technology, and what is real or not. It set much of the tone for cinema in the decades to follow!

The Matrix Revolutions
After two successful films in the 'Matrix' franchise, filmmakers Lilly and Lana Wachowski wrap up the original trilogy with 'The Matrix Revolutions'. It is, almost indisputably, the weakest film of this initial trilogy. Here, we follow Neo (Keanu Reeves) after facing the sentinels in the real world and having his mind trapped in a place between the Matrix and reality, from which he can only escape with the help of Trainman (Bruce Spence). It is an energetic film and, once again, with good performances. However, you can already feel a very large disconnect from the original idea of the trilogy, with some perceptions, ideas and subplots that don't fit as well into the story as what was seen in the other films. It's far from being a bad movie, but it's also far from the essence of 'Matrix'.
The Matrix Reloaded
After the absolute success that was 'The Matrix' revolution, filmmakers Lilly and Lana Wachowski returned to audiences with the great sequel 'The Matrix Reloaded'. Though a few steps below the original movie, this sequel hits the right tone, style, and story by showing Neo (Keanu Reeves) still living on the Nebuchadnezzar alongside Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), and Link (Harold Perrineau Jr.), the new crewmember of the ship. However, the atmosphere is even more warlike: the machines are carrying out a major offensive against Zion, where 250 thousand robotic creatures are tunneling towards the city and can reach it in a few days. It's a movie that follows the ticking time bomb path, with a cohesive plot and good action scenes. It's not as memorable as the original, but it's also far, far from disappointing.

Uglies
Uglies is the highly anticipated film inspired by the book of the same name, part of a globally successful saga written by Scott Westerfeld. The story is set in a dystopian world where cosmetic surgeries are performed on everyone at 16 to make them "perfect." Directed by McG, known for gems like The Babysitter and Charlie's Angels, the movie blends sci-fi with action—like a new Hunger Games. Joey King, the lead actress, steps out of her comfort zone in what is Netflix’s first solid attempt at building its own teen franchise.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man
Hellboy: The Crooked Man is the fourth attempt to bring the "red one" to the big screen — two of which were well-received, directed by Guillermo del Toro. In this one, director Brian Taylor works closely with Mike Mignola, the character's creator, to make a smaller film: clearly, there’s a lower budget, reducing the space Hellboy occupies. It’s a more contained and less megalomaniac film, heavily inspired by folk horror. At the same time, it is also a much stranger film than the previous ones: Hellboy is more disillusioned, not believing in life, and somewhat more passive. This may be the weakest adaptation of the four, mainly due to the lack of money to make something good — the digitally created spider and raccoon look like they’re from a 2000s video game. Still, Hellboy: The Crooked Man is a good attempt that aims to change the tone of the franchise and show that there is something interesting out there.
Dry Ground Burning
Just released from prison, Léa returns home to the Brasilia favela of Sol Nascente and joins up with her half-sister Chitara, the fearless leader of an all-female gang that steals and refines oil from underground pipes and sells gasoline to a clandestine network of motorcyclists. Living in constant opposition to Jair Bolsonaro’s fiercely authoritarian and militarized government, Chitara’s women claim the streets for themselves as a declaration of radical political resistance on behalf of ex-cons and the oppressed.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Set in Middle-earth 60 years before the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, the adventure follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom from the fearsome dragon Smaug.
