Movies about social media influencers to watch online

Social media has transformed the way we communicate and consume information – for better and for worse. On one hand, it has democratized access not only to content consumption but also to its creation. On the other, this democratization has led to a wave of misinformation and intensified the cult of celebrity. There are positive aspects, but also issues that deserve a critical perspective on this phenomenon. To explore this topic further, Filmelier has curated a selection of movies about social media influencers to watch online, ranging from fiction films to documentaries that examine different sides of the issue.

An experiment on the digital age - and how far people are willing to go to become famous in this world that doesn't match reality. 'Fake Famous' is a wake-up call for young people who believe that gaining fame online is the solution to their lives, and social media can convince them that being a digital influencer is more profitable than having any other kind of "profession". Of course, the internet is a tool that helps cause and can be used in a healthy way, but this notion is often lost with the excess of content that impacts us all every day. The documentary brings an intelligent view of the phenomenon that is digital influence. In addition to being informative and entertaining, the movie also makes us reflect on the time and resources that are being spent behind a screen while real life is happening.

This comedic critique of current society, where everything is done in the pursuit of social media acceptance, packs plenty of jabs that make us reflect on the need that internet has created in our minds and how it can interfere in our lives. 'Ingrid Goes West' provokes lots of laughter thanks to great performances by Audrey Plaza (from the show 'Legion') and Elizabeth Olsen (the Scarlet Witch from Marvel movies).

There are several movies that talk about the problems of hyperconnectivity. It starts with the seminal issue in 'The Social Network', passing through provocative documentaries such as 'The Dilemma of Networks' and 'The Great Hack' and even productions that move into suspense or some "genre" story, like 'Ingrid Goes West'. But one of the good surprises about this topic is 'Sweat', or 'Suor'. Directed and written by Magnus von Horn, the movie follows the story of Sylwia (Magdalena Kolesnik), a young Polish woman who is a success on social networks. She has almost 600 thousand followers and has become a reference in Poland when it comes to care, health, physical exercise and well-being. However, in intimacy, things are not going so well. She has no boyfriends, no great friends and everything around her seems fake, fragile and shallow. Thus, following a path more 'Ingrid Goes West' and 'Rust' than 'The Dilemma of Networks', von Horn's film is not so concerned with talking about the medium and about social networks. The concern of 'Sweat' is more focused on observing and allowing the viewer to dive into the lives of those who seem to have a perfect daily life, without flaws. Does this really exist? Is there real life, with pain and depression, behind the Instagram filters?

Enough has been said about the culture of internet influencers, driven by an almost pathological need for attention. It's hard to add something new and relevant to the topic and 'Not Okay' may not be able to - but that's not its intention either. The story follows a young woman, Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch, from 'Zombieland: Double Tap'), who, with no direction or prospects in her life, decides to fake a trip to Paris with fake photos. However, everything gets complicated when a terrorist attack hits the French capital, so everyone thinks she is a survivor and a heroine, and Danni decides to continue the lie to the last consequences. Even though 'Not Okay' does not present new plots on the subject, it is an incisive and funny satire, with a great performance from the always fascinating Deutch.
