After the death of his father, a sea captain, Ilka became even closer to his mother and older sister. More and more often, he consults with them and reads his poems, comically closing his eyes. Zoya, in love with a student at the naval school, Yura Borikovsky, gave him, with her brother's consent, a treasured notebook with poems to look at. But the very next day, Ilka is forced to take her back from Yura, who turned out to be a scoundrel.
