"Beating Hearts is the second film directed solo by French actor Gilles Lellouche and can best be described as West Side Story filtered through Martin Scorsese’s urban violence. It’s an intense romantic drama that begins with a boy and girl from different social classes who fall deeply in love but are separated when he is pulled into a life of crime and spends over 10 years in prison. Upon release, he (François Civil) searches for her (Adèle Exarchopoulos), who has already moved on with her life. What they try to rebuild together, however, is doomed by the weight of the past. The film contains some romantic clichés and significant levels of physical violence. It may feel somewhat naive, but if you’re into stories of intense and tragically doomed romance, you’ve come to the right place."
