"The Roses is a somewhat dysfunctional film from filmmaker Jay Roach (Meet the Parents). With a considerably outdated, yet very British, humor, the film tells the story of a couple (Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman) who love each other, raise a beautiful family, and pursue the careers they always wanted—he, a successful architect; she, a relatively unsuccessful cook. Until, after a storm, their roles are reversed. He falls from grace, she becomes the owner of a successful restaurant. Roach then analyzes the complications of a marriage, injecting passive-aggressive humor as these two try to understand what love is amidst their differences. The cast is good, especially Colman, but it's worth noting that there are some outdated jokes, especially with a sexist tone that would only work in the 1980s. Beneath that, however, there's an interesting commentary on family, bruised egos, and some good British jokes."
