When a titan music mogul (Denzel Washington), widely known as having the “best ears in the business,” is targeted with a ransom plot, he is jammed up in a life-or-death moral dilemma. Brothers Denzel Washington and Spike Lee reunite for the fifth time in their long working relationship for a reinterpretation of the great filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s crime thriller “High and Low,” now played out on the mean streets of modern day New York City.
"Highest 2 Lowest is a film that brings together director Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing) and Denzel Washington in what is essentially a remake of the classic High and Low by Japanese master Akira Kurosawa. The story follows a powerful music mogul (Washington), who, when extorted through the kidnapping of his son, faces a complex moral dilemma. While it doesn't come close to being the best film by its director, it does remind us why his collaborations with Washington are so powerful. Additionally, it offers a solid update to one of Kurosawa’s darkest classics, turning it into a more fun and optimistic story that also celebrates New York’s music and sports culture."
