"Mona Fastvold's sensitive film, 'A Fascinating New World', is a feature-length movie about a lesbian romance in 19th century America. With all the difficulties that a homosexual love could face during this period, we follow Abigail (Katherine Waterston of 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them') and Tallie (Vanessa Kirby of 'Pieces of a Woman'). They meet, they love, they face the outside world together. Meanwhile, Fastvold gives the movie a slow pace, with an unusual editing style to show the passage of time abruptly - which, in the end, ends up hindering the audience's immersion in these characters. The absolute highlight is Kirby and Waterston, in performances that transition between emotion and the strength they need to have. Surprise also for Casey Affleck, the counterpoint of the romance."
