Cristina, a journalist of Mexican origin, travels to her ancestral home in Veracruz to investigate a story of sorcery and healing. There, she is kidnapped by a group of locals who claim she's the devil incarnated.
""The Old Ways" reminds of the 2008 production, "The Ruins", much due to the cinematography, but the story is different. The plot follows a journalist who goes to Veracruz, Mexico, to investigate a witchcraft case and ends up being kidnapped by a group that believes she is the incarnation of the devil. Even though possessions have become a common place in horror, this movie manages to bring a very unique narrative, perhaps due to the historical context, which makes the story better grounded and intriguing. There is no excessive use of jumpscares or gratuitous violence, which is already a revitalization of the genre. The construction of the horror elements are well placed, leaving a very uncomfortable atmosphere. And the ending is quite surprising, even bordering on being comical."
