Smart, quick-witted Julie is in her mid-20s. She marches to the beat of her own drum and has her own manifesto: do nothing. And she really means NOTHING: no work, no studies, no friends. Agnes is a happy-go-lucky nurse of the same age. With a husband and a child, she fits into society's expectations without giving them any great thought--until, that is, she meets Julie. Together they start a rebellion that brings them to the limits of their respective worlds.
"Intimate German drama full of peculiarities, 'Stillstehen' begins with a story that sets the tone for the movie: the protagonist Julie (Natalia Belitski), as a child, was bothered by the proactivity of ants and, in revolt, set fire to an anthill. She couldn't stand those comings and goings, that work, all that movement. It is from this that we know more about the character, who could easily have come from French cinema, and who simply gave up on "being" or "doing". In 'Stillstehen', Julie has only one proposal in her life: to do nothing. From there, we dive into a film that analyzes the social aspects and impositions that leave people hostage to other people's decisions. With meticulous direction from Elisa Mishto, award-winning German short filmmaker, the feature film embraces a slow pace (and even a bit of non-sense cinema) to challenge, question and, above all, make us think about the exact purpose of our lives."
