Why watch the movie Leona?
"Awarded at the Morelia Film Festival for Naian Gonzalez Norvind's performance, 'Leona' is a powerful Mexican film about the tensions between who we want to be and who others want us to be. The story follows Ariela, a young Jewish artist who is pressured by her family to find a partner within her community. However, she falls in love with a non-Jewish man who shows her the possibilities that exist beyond her social circle. With her performance, Gonzalez Norvind carries the film on her back, which directly addresses the contradictions and anachronisms of a closed and yet highly macho community."
