Z the worker ant (Woody Allen) strives to reconcile his own individuality with the communal work-ethic of the ant colony. He falls in love with ant-Princess Bala (Sharon Stone), Z strives to make social inroads, and then must save the ant colony from the treacherous scheming of the evil General Mandible (Gene Hackman) that threaten to wipe out the entire worker population.
"The first animated film from DreamWorks Animation is very memorable for the feud with Disney and Pixar, who released a movie with an almost identical premise in the same year: that of a worker ant who falls in love with the princess and fights to save his society to impress her. It's the same plot shared by Antz: Hormiguitaz and A Bug's Life. Beyond the back and forth on the topic, we're dealing with a very competent movie, with an enviable voice cast (including names like Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, Jennifer Lopez, Sylvester Stallone, Christopher Walken, Dan Aykroyd, Anne Bancroft, Danny Glover and Gene Hackman), which is also historic for launching one of the most important animation studios in the world, in the era when computer animation was just scratching the surface of its potential. Unlike its Pixar counterpart, there are themes and scenes here that are not exactly meant for children, so it's a production that adults will enjoy too."
