"This is Ewan McGregor's directorial debut, embracing an ambitious project—the adaptation of a complex book written by Philip Roth. The result is far from perfect, but the story has a good pace and an extremely interesting cinematography. McGregor also makes up for his deficiency behind the camera with a good performance in front of it, as well as Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning. If you pay less attention to directing technique and more to performances or a good story, you'll like it."
