Why watch this film?
When his husband Gabriel files for divorce, Nicky fights for custody of their 8-year-old son Owen, as he struggles to come to terms with what it means to love someone and what it means to be a father.
"There's a character in Our Son who raises an interesting question: the LGBTQIA+ community has fought so hard for the right to marry and start a family that it seems like a waste for them to divorce "like everybody else." That's what the sad story of this film is about, in which Billy Porter and Luke Evans play a gay couple who, despite having a child in common, decide to separate and fight for custody. It's the kind of story seen many times before in dramas like Kramer vs. Kramer, but this film adds necessary contemporary nuances and a very grounded humanity: yes, there has been a lot of fighting for those desires. But in the end, like everyone else, members of the community are as human as we are, with virtues and flaws, which Evans and Porter do justice to."
