"Vermiglio is a film by director Maura Delpero, named after a commune in the Italian Alps. The plot is set during World War II and follows a deserter soldier who returns to the mountain village. There, he changes the life of the local schoolmaster's family by falling in love with his daughter. However, the family's secrets and the soldier’s presence will lead them all toward an unexpected fate. Vermiglio is one of those films that aims for complete immersion in the era it’s set in, with beautiful naturalistic photography shot on location, blending both professional actors and locals speaking the village dialect. In addition to this immersion, the film offers a narrative that requires patience but rewards the viewer with subtle surprises. It also won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival."
