In the French film The Baby (La petite), we follow a story about loss and hope intertwined with interesting moral dilemmas. The plot follows a grieving man (Fabrice Luchini) who, after the sudden death of his son and husband, travels to Belgium in search of the surrogate mother carrying the baby they were expecting, his granddaughter. However, things are not so straightforward, as the mother (Mara Taquin) is unsure about handing over the baby to a new person. The film explores how we cope with grief and attempt to prolong the presence of our loved ones after they’re gone, while also offering reflections on what family truly means—whether by blood or chosen bonds. Beyond all that, it’s guaranteed to move you deeply.
