After a little white lie about losing her virginity gets out, a clean cut high school girl (Emma Stone) sees her life paralleling Hester Prynne's in "The Scarlet Letter," which she is currently studying in school – until she decides to use the rumor mill to advance her social and financial standing.

"Loosely inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter, Easy A is a teenage comedy featuring Emma Stone in one of the breakout roles of her career. The film follows the experiences of Olive Penderghast (Stone) during high school after an innocent lie about her sex life turns into a rumor that spins out of control. She, however, decides to embrace her new reputation, leading to unexpected and catastrophic results. The film sparks discussions about how others' sexualities are used as a measure of morality and, similar to Hawthorne's novel, exposes the hypocrisies and injustices of a society that incites sexual desire but also punishes it."
