Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America: Brave New World hit theaters at a strange time in U.S. politics, with Donald Trump taking office once again. Meanwhile, Marvel’s film is entirely built as a political thriller, with the story focusing on the Captain (Anthony Mackie) dealing with an unstable president (Harrison Ford) who suffers from rage outbursts, turning into the Red Hulk. Parallels with the real world? Maybe. The film seems to walk on eggshells when it comes to political themes while also failing to establish a solid narrative, resulting in a choppy movie with no real personality from director Julius Onah (of the awful The Cloverfield Paradox, but the solid Luce). It’s a generic film, almost soulless, always afraid to take a stand. That being said, it’s still a Marvel movie with the studio’s signature post-Endgame style—fun action, some well-crafted lines, and strong performances from Mackie and Ford, above all. Beyond that? Pretty much nothing. Watch the complete saga!
