"The Kitchen (La cocina) is the fourth feature film by Mexican filmmaker Alonso Ruizpalacios (Güeros), adapting Arnold Wesker's play The Kitchen (1957) to a contemporary setting. The plot follows a group of employees, mostly undocumented immigrants, during a workday in a restaurant in Times Square, New York. The central thread is the complicated relationship between Pedro (Raúl Briones, A Cop Movie), a Mexican immigrant working as a cook, and Julia (Rooney Mara, A Ghost Story), an American waitress. Through complex long takes that follow the characters during the intense daily routine in the restaurant, Ruizpalacios dismantles the myth of the American Dream and reveals its dehumanizing reality, the human disconnection in everyday labor exploitation, as well as the utilitarian nature of the relationship between the United States and its neighboring or allied countries."
