Misericordia

Misericordia gained international recognition after Cahiers du Cinéma named it the best film of 2024. And rightfully so: the movie tells the story of a young man returning to his hometown for his former boss's funeral. Banal? Not at all. From this premise, filmmaker Alain Guiraudie (of the overrated Stranger by the Lake) crafts a film with shades of Pasolini’s Teorema, exploring the limits and reflections of love. Best of all, Guiraudie's screenplay doesn’t settle for just a dramatic tone but adds biting humor, full of irony, with absurd scenes — including an already iconic sequence involving a priest and an erection. A masterpiece.
