The film is a biographical account of writer Saadat Hasan Manto's life and is set in 1940s India.

"Selected for the Cannes festivals (in the Un Certain Regard section) and Toronto (participating in the election for best film by the public), 'Manto' is the biopic of one of India and Pakistan's most important writers, Saadat Hasan Manto. The feature also subtly portrays the ways in which we, as individuals, connect with our countries in turbulent times, regardless of our professional or religious identities. After all, Manto lived through a turbulent time in Indian history, fighting against English domination and for independence, in addition to the political division of the subcontinent (between Muslims and Hindus) - which inspired an important part of the author's literature."
