Argan is a well-to-do stingy hypochondriac. The physician Mr. Purgon and the apothecary Mr. Fleurant exploit his obsession in order to make money. His brother, Béralde, insists that Argan's second wife, Béline, wants to alienate him from his daughters, Angélique and Louison, with intent to achieve her own ends. In order to ensure medical care for free, Argan wants to marry Angélique off to a doctor without caring about the fact that she is in love with Cléante. Béralde, together with Argan's maid-servant, Toinette, think of a way to make him face reality.
