"The Amateur is an action and espionage thriller with a unique premise. The protagonist is not the typical prodigy agent like Jason Bourne or Jack Reacher, expert shooters and lethal in hand-to-hand combat. Instead, the protagonist, played by Rami Malek, is an autistic man, a cryptographer for the CIA, who convinces the agency to train him and send him on a mission to find the person responsible for his wife’s death (Rachel Brosnahan). Given his lack of physical aptitude, he must rely on his intelligence and technological ingenuity to combat his enemies. While the plot doesn't push this premise further, the film at least stands out in the vast sea of spy movies due to its protagonist's cleverness."
