The Mountain

"At the peak of lobotomy popularity in the 1950s, 'The Mountain' is a film by director Rick Alverson that completely shreds the nostalgia for this often idealized era, as portrayed by popular culture as a simpler, even romantic time. Instead, it drags us into a distant atmosphere of clinical coldness with its pristine images (from Mexican cinematographer Lorenzo Hagerman, who has worked on films like 'Heli', 'Everything Else' and 'Presumed Guilty'), painting a portrait of a more inhuman era than we usually remember. The movie features a formidable cast, with actors like Denis Lavant ('Holy Motors'), Hannah Gross ('The Sinner') and Udo Kier ('Nymphomaniac') in minor roles, though it's Tye Sheridan ('Ready Player One') and Jeff Goldblum ('The Fly') who will take you through this chilling tour of 1950s American mental institutions."
