"Movies about chess always walk a tightrope. After all, depending on the filmmaker's approach, it can become absolutely unbearable to follow or, if handled well, can become exciting with every move on the board. The latter is thankfully the case with 'Fahim'. A French production directed by Pierre-François Martin-Laval (of the fun 'The Professors'), the film balances the emotion of the chess games played by the young protagonist while living the dramas of a refugee family in France. Gerard Depardieu's participation as an obstinate teacher further enhances the feature film. And in the end, in this mix of 'Queen of Katwe', 'The Game Master' and 'Dheepan: Refuge', there is a sensitive and delicate movie about new paths to be traced and possibilities seen in the sport - whatever it may be."
