A drover, "Whip", has a romance with a half-caste girl who is the daughter of the local publican. Set in a pub called "The Boast of Virtue" in the small town of Jandarrie. Geoff Clark, a mechanic is new to town, is playing cards with Bart, a middle aged man. Peggy is the pubkeepers daughter. Peggy is "half caste" although Geoff doesn't realise it at first. Peggy was adopted by Kate, who owns the pub. Peggy is dating stockman Whip O'Connor. Whip arrives. Kate warns him away from Peggy and warns Peggy that Whip wants to leave town. Mr Nicholson invites Whip away with him to the city. Whip changes his mind and Kate persuades Mr Nicholson to give up their arrangement.
