Ferine Review: Blood on the Brutalist Walls

The rooms in Ferine do not shelter Irene. They appraise her. Andrea Corsini places the grieving art collector inside a monumental home of polished stone, severe angles, and long pockets of negative space. Its brutalist geometry first suggests wealth disciplined into taste. After the death of the infant she hoped to raise, the same walls begin to resemble the enclosure at Dama’s exotic-animal compound. One woman owns art, the other owns predators, and the film keeps narrowing the moral distance between those habits. Corsini’s feature debut grows from an act of cruelty that arrives early and leaves no clean route back. Irene, scarred by miscarriages, enters a covert

‘Ferine’ Review: Andrea Corsini Introduces Himself as the Next Truly Terrifying Italian Auteur to Watch

Breath catches for all sorts of reasons. The pull of a trigger. The promise of sex. The sudden sight of a dish so delicious — or grotesque — the body briefly forgets its need for oxygen. Many of Italy’s greatest artists understand these sensations belong to the same family, and with his astonishing feature debut, “Ferine,” Andrea Corsini proves himself a terrifying new heir to that tradition in cinema. From Dario Argento to Mario Bava and Lucio Fulci, Italy’s most infamous horror directors are responsible for nightmares as rapturous as they are confusing. Painterly compositions, operatic violence, and surreal emotional logic overwhelm the audience in twisted worlds that overwhelm first and explain second. Intoxicating as it is visually savage, “Ferine” embraces that philosophy with striking confidence as Corsini boldly invites the audience to stalk the truth alongside him — ultimately, trusting they’ll appreciate the hunt as much as the kill.

‘Ferine’ Trailer Unleashes a Feral Appetite [Fantasia]

Ahead of its World Premiere at Fantasia this week, Dread Central has unveiled the official festival trailer for Ferine… and it has me feeling anything but hungry. In the film, “A tragic event shatters a rich art collector’s life, awakening her primal nature. She destroys her privileged existence to build a new concept of family, leading her on a path of destruction and animalistic transformation.” Drawing from films like The Lure, Titane, Ginger Snaps, In My Skin, and Raw, the trailer continues a long tradition of feminist horror centered on women transforming into something primal, driven by an insatiable hunger for flesh. While it doesn’t appear to reinvent the subgenre, it nevertheless makes for an intriguing first look. Described as “a complex, thrilling fable about the never-ending struggle between the rational and animal sides of human nature,” the tale comes from writer/director Andrea Corsini. ‘Ferine’ Trailer: Carolyn Bracken Hunts Through Grief in Andrea Corsini’s Debut Horror Feature

“A good hunter, in order to understand her predator, needs to know where her last kill came from.” That warning hangs over the first teaser for writer/director Andrea Corsini’s “Ferine,” a deeply unsettling glimpse at a new mysterious horror movie making its international premiere in Fantasia’s prestigious Cheval Noir Competition on July 23. IndieWire exclusively debuts both the teaser and poster below — but your guess is as good as ours when it comes to understanding this particular piece of cinematic prey. The feature directorial debut of its Italian filmmaker, Corsini’s “Ferine” stars Carolyn Bracken (“Oddity”) as Irene. She’s a wealthy art collector whose life is abruptly shattered by tragedy after adopting a baby through a surrogate arrangement. As grief gives way to Irene’s more primal mourning instincts, the protagonist’s path collides with Caroline Goodall’s always-collected Dama (“Schindler’s List”). And soon, the affluent trafficker
