‘Clayface’ Review: DC’s Gross-Out Monster Movie Is Mostly Effective

Everything old is new again. “Clayface” is the third feature film in the new, rebooted DC Universe, and on the surface it looks like a novelty. Instead of a big budget film about one of the comic book company’s many name-brand superheroes, it’s a relatively inexpensive R-rated horror movie about a monstrous supervillain who runs amok with no heroes to stop him. After repeated, failed attempts to turn comic book rogues into mainstream antiheroes with flops like “Morbius,” “Kraven the Hunter” and “Black Adam,” James Watkins’ new film doubles down on the idea that the Batman villain Clayface is — in spite of his (arguably) sympathetic origin story — a frightening,

The Invisible Man gave us one of the deadliest monsters of the 1930s

Claude Rains was terrific in 1933’s The Invisible Man – and his archetypal mad scientist was far more murderous than you might remember. Like the lofty forehead and bolts through the neck on Frankenstein’s monster, or the staring face of Bela Lugosi in Dracula, the title character in The Invisible Man has become part of our collective pop cultural memory. The black hat and matching round goggles; the face wrapped up in bandages. It’s an image that has been recycled, copied and parodied since James Whale’s film emerged in 1933, whether in direct sequels, later adaptations of Hg Wells’s text (like the BBC’s 1984 series) or homages like Sam Raimi’s Darkman.

This brutal boogeyman pushed horror to exciting new places, but so much of the character’s impact is the result of Robert Englund’s quintessential performance. Englund has a long and storied career as a performer that’s covered far more than horror alone. However, there’s such a sublime, sinister synergy between Englund and this heightened genre that’s made him one of horror’s most revered names. Englund is set to scare audiences again as a malevolent reimagining of Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio Unstrung, but he’s also
