‘Frankenstein’ vs. Oscar: The Academy Awards history of the iconic monster

Guillermo del Toro is the latest filmmaker to bring Mary Shelley's classic monster back to life on the big screen with his new adaptation of Frankenstein. According to Wikipedia, there have been 423 known feature films and 204 short films about this reanimated corpse, dating back more than a century. But how many of them found their way to the Academy Awards? Undoubtedly the most famous movie version was Universal's 1931 classic, starring Boris Karloff as the monster. Directed by James Whale, the cast also included Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, John Boles, Dwight Frye, Edward Van Sloan, and Frederick Kerr. It may have been completely ignored by the Academy, but it

All 18 Actors Who Played Van Helsing In Movies

Abraham Van Helsing was a prominent literary figure from Bram Stokers 1897 novel Dracula, and several actors have played the character in movies over the years. Several Dracula adaptations were great, whereas others flopped, but the book was a difficult title to get right because it was so legendary. Dracula A Love Tale was recently announced, and many were quick to voice their hopes that the project was an improvement on past attempts to bring Stokers story to life. Van Helsing was notably the arch nemesis of Count Dracula, one of the most powerful vampires from movies and TV and the defining figure in literature. His role as a vampire slayer was often translated in many different ways, with each interpretation altering his appearance, personality, and even profession. Abraham Van Helsing was a variety of men in the cinematic world, and a huge selection of actors have slipped into his shoes.

Van Helsing TV series in the works at CBS, set in modern day New York

CBS has come out the winner in a bidding war to become the home to a new TV series based on Dracula’s legendary foe Dr. Abraham Van Helsing… and no, this project does not (despite the image above) have anything to do with the 2004 Hugh Jackman movie. Or the Van Helsing show that ran on Syfy for five seasons, wrapping up in 2021. Or any previous version of Van Helsing, a character who has been played by the likes of Edward Van Sloan, Peter Cushing, Anthony Hopkins, Mel Brooks, Rutger Hauer, and many others over the decades. This is a fresh take on the character that’s coming our way from Elementary creator Rob Doherty, Carl Beverly, Sarah Timberman and Lionsgate Television. Deadline reports that this contemporary version of monster hunter Dr. Abraham Van Helsing uses his uniquely inquisitive mind working alongside his ex, relentless FBI special agent Mina Harker,

Every Failed Van Helsing Reboot, From Tom Cruise to Channing Tatum

Abraham Van Helsing was first introduced in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. Inevitably, the character made his way into the 1931 Universal feature Dracula, portrayed by Edward Van Sloan (who would reprise the role in Dracula's Daughter in 1936). In the original novel, Helsing's presence is only requested by the main characters because of his knowledge of diseases. When the figure was translated into other media, he morphed into someone whose entire job was based around knowing everything and anything about monsters. Helsing would prove a fixture of various Dracula adaptations in the years to come, including Peter Cushing's incarnation of the character in the Hammer Dracula features and Anthony Hopkins inhabiting the role in the 1992 motion picture Bram Stoker's Dracula.

2023 Dracula Box Office Flop Nearly Featured Van Helsing Cameo, Reveals Writer

The Last Voyage of the Demeter writer reveals that there was originally a Van Helsing cameo planned for the movie's alternate ending. Van Helsing's inclusion could have set up a potential sequel and a dramatic rematch between Clemens and Dracula, deviating further from the source material. However, the decision not to include Van Helsing was likely a wise one, as it would have risked making the film too convoluted and potentially alienating audiences. With the movie's ending already leaving on a cliffhanger, The Last Voyage of the Demeter writer Bragi F. Schut reveals it nearly featured a Van Helsing cameo. The 2023 horror-thriller served as an adaptation of "The Captain's Log" chapter from Bram Stoker's Dracula, revolving around the crew of the titular merchant ship as they unknowingly transport the iconic vampire from Transylvania to England. After languishing in development hell for almost 20 years, the movie finally hit theaters in

Universal's Most Iconic Monster Hunter Might Surprise You

There are several faces that haunt the first cycle in the Universal horror canon. The men who played the monsters in nearly all those early entries, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, are to be expected. Dwight Frye pops up repeatedly as a succession of madmen and henchmen. Valerie Hobson played a few heroines, while poor David Manners played more than a few hapless juvenile heroes. But, if the underwritten, ineffectual young men Manners was saddled with couldn’t do much more than fret, another actor was on hand to provide Universal with effective monster hunters: Edward Van Sloan, who squared off against Count Dracula, Frankenstein’s creation, and Imhotep the mummy across four various horror films.
