Trouble on Set: Snakes, Sinking Boats, and Elephant Hunts: The Incredible Story Behind the Making of ‘The African Queen’ (1951)

Making movies isn’t easy, let alone making a good one. I’ve been there, and even then, they were just short films. Recently, I went through hell and high water to get a project off the ground. The permits, putting together a cast, dealing with a producer who was new to the business—it all requires patience, a strong will, and a driven personality just to reach the finish line. The making of “The African Queen” took place during a transitional period for Hollywood. It was the 1950s, and the industry had to face a formidable new competitor: television. People were spending more time at home, so studios had

What Ray Bradbury Really Thought About The 1966 Fahrenheit 451 Adaptation

Ray Bradbury was turning into a literary force of nature in the early 1950s. Like many novelists, he then saw an opportunity to take his talents to Hollywood, where he could make good money writing screenplays. Though he'd written works like "The Martian Chronicles" and "Fahrenheit 451," the latter of which seemed a natural for a big screen adaptation, John Huston hired him to wrestle with Herman Melville's whaling epic "Moby-Dick." It went horribly. Luckily, Bradbury struck up a much friendlier creative relationship with actor/director Charles Laughton and his wife Elsa Lanchester ("The Bride of Frankenstein"). Laughton persuaded the young writer to turn "Fahrenheit 451" into a stage play.

The Bride! Review: Buckley Burns, Bale Aches, and Gyllenhaal Swings Hard

In James Whale’s 1935 Bride of Frankenstein, Elsa Lanchester’s title character arrives in the final five minutes, speaks nothing, and is given no interiority whatsoever. She hisses. She recoils. She exists to be shown, never heard. Maggie Gyllenhaal looked at that silence and decided it was worth two hours and six minutes of furious, sprawling response. The Bride! is a punk-feminist tragicomedy set in 1930s Chicago and New York, a film that refuses to stay in one lane for longer than a few minutes at a stretch. It is gothic horror, gangster picture, road movie, musical, and feminist manifesto, sometimes all within the same scene. Mary Shelley herself, played

Double the Terror and Fun: 10 of Horror’s Best Sequels Ahead of ‘Ready or Not 2’

I’ve always loved a sequel. As a child, I assumed the more recent the film, the higher the quality, and I frequently jumped into the middle of long-established franchises before seeking out their opening chapters. Ghostbusters II, for example, still holds a special place in my heart because it introduced me to the haunted world of 80s-era New York City long before I watched Ivan Reitman’s 1894 classic. In many ways, sequels have an easier path than other films. With a built-in audience often demanding its existence, the sequel can forgo cumbersome table setting and get down to business in a previously established scenario. Audiences sink back into a
