The American French Film Festival At 30: Building Bridges Between French Cinema & Hollywood

The American French Film Festival is kicking of its 30th edition tomorrow (November 3) at the DGA Theater Complex in L.A. and this year looks set to be one of its biggest lineups to date. The six-day event, which will open with animated feature In Waves, will screen 60 French films and series, many of which are either North American or U.S. premieres. This year’s selection is notably rich in mainstream titles, which Tafff organizers say is reflective of how the festival’s ambitions have grown across the last three decades. “It has become something entirely different in scope and content,” says Tafff Deputy Director Anouchka van Riel. “At the beginning we focused more on niche cinema, but we have since evolved into more significant industry event and we have become a sturdy bridge across the Atlantic.” Tafff’s opening night film makes that evolution particularly clear. ‘The Blood Countess’ Director Says She Was Forced to Cut Up to 20 Minutes

Ulrike Ottinger says she was pressured to cut 15–20 minutes from The Blood Countess, her vampire film starring Isabelle Huppert (Greta). And once that footage was gone, she had to re-edit the whole movie to get it flowing again. Speaking at the Tokyo International Film Festival, as reported by Variety, Ottinger was unusually honest about the process. “The film originally had a wonderful rhythm, exactly as it was. Then I began cutting it because everyone was forcing me to. Once I started shortening it, the rhythm no longer worked,” she said. That meant rebuilding the film at its shorter length. She does, however, stand behind the result. “From my point of view, it’s perfect now, but it was a big job to rework it again,” Ottinger explained. Dread Central wasn’t so taken with what ended up on screen. In her review, Mary Beth McAndrews called the film “beautiful nonsense,

Ulrike Ottinger Claims Isabelle Huppert Vampire Film ‘The Blood Countess’ Was Altered Against Her Wishes

Veteran German filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger revealed at the Tokyo International Film Festival that her vampire film “The Blood Countess” (“Die Blutgräfin”), starring Isabelle Huppert, was significantly edited without her consent. Ottinger stated that the film was shortened by as much as 20 minutes, a decision she opposed. The Chenab Times has learned that Ottinger made these remarks during a retrospective of her work at the Tokyo festival. In “The Blood Countess,” Huppert portrays a vampire countess who reappears in contemporary times, exploring themes often found in Ottinger’s avant-garde cinematic style. Ottinger, known for her distinctive and often experimental approach to filmmaking, has a body of work that frequently delves into the surreal,

Isabelle Huppert Vampire Film ‘The Blood Countess’ Was Cut Against Director’s Wishes, Ulrike Ottinger Tells Tokyo Event

Isabelle Huppert vampire film “The Blood Countess” lost as much as 20 minutes against the wishes of its director, Ulrike Ottinger, the veteran German filmmaker said at the Tokyo International Film Festival, which is hosting a retrospective of her work. In “The Blood Countess” (“Die Blutgräfin”), Huppert plays a vampire countess who resurfaces in present-day Vienna. Lars Eidinger and Burgtheater actor Birgit Minichmayr co-star. The film world-premiered at the Berlinale in February. Ottinger said her preferred version ran 15 to 20 minutes longer. “The film originally had a wonderful rhythm, exactly as it was. Then I began cutting it because everyone was forcing me to. Once I started shortening it, the rhythm no longer worked,” she said at a German cinema evening at the festival. She then had to recut the whole film to restore its balance at the shorter length. “From my point of view, it’s perfect now, but it was

Todd Haynes and Cate Blanchett Plan Reunion with Adaptation of Jean Genet’s The Maids

Every Todd Haynes movie—especially when they’re susceptible to last-minute cancellations—is an event and a gift. Thus as we await the overdue, Cannes-likely arrival of De Noche, it’s heartening to know the next-next project is already in motion. Speaking with Le Point, Haynes revealed the project is a take on Jean Genet’s play The Maids that will likely star Cate Blanchett, who’d participated in a 2013 performance with Isabelle Huppert and Elizabeth DeBicki. Details remain slim, the writer-director making sure to note that he “can’t say anything” about his “very specific take” that he’s not seen elsewhere. Genet, in Haynes’ estimation, is “an absolute

Egypt’s El Gouna Kicks Off Mena Fall Film Festival Season With Local Breakouts, Oscar Contenders & Emerging Talents

The Middle East and North Africa’s 2026 fall film festival season gets underway today with the 9th El Gouna Film Festival. Unfolding in its namesake Egyptian Red Sea resort of El Gouna, the festival opens with a red-carpet gala screening of French director Marc Fitoussi’s drama All About Corinne, starring Isabelle Huppert as a jobbing actress who strikes up an unexpected friendship with a big screen star. This edition is Andrew Mohsen’s first in the role of artistic director, replacing respected distributor and exhibitor Marianne Khoury who stepped down from the position earlier this year. Mohsen, who has been in the programming team since 2023, having previously worked at the Cairo Film Festival, is in his element. He explains that the team has also had its eye on next year’s edition, the festival’s 10th, as it got to work on the 2026 lineup. “We were working on two editions,
