‘The Lives of Others’ Theater Review: Keira Knightley Shines in Stage Version of Oscar-Winning Cold War Drama

It’s not surprising that Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s acclaimed 2006 drama, The Lives of Others, which won the Academy Award for best international film, should resonate so strongly today, as AI makes state surveillance an ever more sophisticated and terrifying fact of life. Anyone coming away from the Gaza documentary Naza, for example, does so with a troubled glance at their smart phone. And who better to adapt the film for the stage than Robert Icke, who made his name with his and Duncan Macmillan’s groundbreaking take on George Orwell’s 1984 and drew acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic with his contemporary version of Oedipus, starring Mark Strong and Tony winner Lesley Manville. Von Donnersmarck set The Lives of Others in the same year that Orwell’s prescient fiction takes place, so this production seems like a match made in dystopian heaven. Netflix Acquires Worldwide On Joel Coen’s ‘Jack Of Spades’ For Fall 2027 Theatrical Release

Netflix is back in business with the Coen Brothers with its global acquisition of the sinister gothic mystery film Jack of Spades, which will be getting a fall 2027 theatrical release ahead of its drop on the streamer. The multi-Oscar-winning duo previously had the western anthology feature The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on the streamer back in 2018; the pic notched three Oscar noms. Joel Coen directs Jack of Spades off a screenplay he wrote with Ethan Coen and Eleanor Catton and Conor McPherson. The project reps their first teaming behind the scenes in quite some time after they’ve separately made their own movies: Joel with Apple’s The Tragedy of Macbeth starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, and Ethan with the crime comedies Drive-Away Dolls and Honey Don’t! Jack of Spades, which is billed as pic with intrigue and betrayal set in the Scottish Highlands, stars Patsy Ferran, Josh O’Connor, Damian Lewis and Lesley Manville. The project is based on Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel The Alien: A Story of Middle Age. Joel Coen reunites here with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel (Inside Llewyn Davis) and longtime composer Carter Burwell, who the brothers have worked with since their 1984 feature directorial debut Blood Simple. Producers are Robert Graf, McDormand and Joel Coen, Steven Rales for Indian Paintbrush, Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin for Blueprint Pictures. Donald MacKinnon is an EP. Joel Coen is a four-time Oscar winner, taking three for No Country for Old Men and Original Screenplay for Fargo. He reteams with wife McDormand after The Tragedy of Macbeth. Rales won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film for producing The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. Netflix is also reteaming with O’Connor after Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man in 2025 and his Emmy-winning turn as Prince Charles in The Crown. The Coens are repped by UTA and attorney Pat Murphy. UTA represented the sale.

After taking his 2021 “The Tragedy of Macbeth” to A24, the filmmaker is bringing his latest solo directorial outing back to Netflix, where he last teamed with brother Ethan Coen on the 2018 release “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.” Rest assured, however, while Ethan is not sharing directing duties with his big brother again, he did co-write the film’s script alongside Joel, novelist and screenwriter Eleanor Catton, and playwright and screenwriter Conor McPherson. The new film is called “Jack of Spades,” and the streamer will give it a theatrical release in the fall of 2027 ahead of its debut on Netflix. The film is based on Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel “The Alien: A Story of Middle Age” and its official logline reads: “A sinister gothic mystery filled with intrigue and betrayal set in the atmospheric Scottish Highlands.” The film will star Olivier Award winner Patsy Ferran,

Netflix has a full plate for this Oscar season — its contenders include La Bola Negra, 14th, Possible Love, Ray Gunn, Ink, Gentle Monster, The Mosquito Bowl, Avedon and In Waves — but that hasn’t stopped the streamer from making plans for next Oscar season, as well. The streamer has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to Joel Coen’s next directorial outing, Jack of Spades, which is based on Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel The Alien: A Story of Middle Age and is being described as “a sinister gothic mystery filled with intrigue and betrayal set in the atmospheric Scottish Highlands.” The film, which wrapped production earlier this year, will be released in theaters in fall 2027 ahead of its release on the platform.
