Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick's Near-Perfect Psychological Thriller Is Officially Back on Streaming

Stephen King is a vocal guy. The Master of Horror has published over 65 novels and novellas, countless short stories, and five nonfiction books since the mid-’70s. The hype that surrounds him is well deserved. King is the kind of writer who appeals to everyone, whether you’re a genre enthusiast or a literary snob. His work has been adapted into TV shows and films, and he’s never afraid to voice his complaints and praise in equal measure. But there’s one adaptational grudge that towers above all. The Shining, published in 1977, is one of King’s most personal works. The novel follows Jack Torrance, a struggling writer who

Jerry Schatzberg Looks You in the Eyes

Self-Portrait.“Maybe I should have a fall at the end of every film now!”I’m calling to check in with Jerry Schatzberg, who is fresh out of the hospital. Two days earlier, at the opening night of a Museum of Modern Art retrospective of his film career, he had shown his feature debut, Puzzle of a Downfall Child (1970), released when he was 43 years old. As he climbed the short flight of stairs to the stage for a Q&a, Schatzberg, now 97, lost his balance and tumbled backward. The whole room screamed. Ushers, museum staff, and his assistants came instantly to his side. He did not move. After five silent minutes, everyone was asked to leave. When he was carted out of the MoMA on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance, the crowd that had lingered outside the theater cheered. He waved softly back. Over the phone, Jerry assures me he’s doing fine,

Stanley Kubrick Won An Oscar - Just Not For Best Director

Although Stanley Kubrick was well-respected in his time, he didn't win as many Oscars as you'd probably think. Sure, he received Best Director nominations for "Dr. Strangelove," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "A Clockwork Orange," and "Barry Lyndon," but he didn't win any of those. One of his most acclaimed movies, "The Shining," didn't even receive any Oscar nods at all. Kubrick's only Oscar win was for Best Special Visual Effects for his 1968 sci-fi film, "2001: A Space Odyssey." The movie competed against "Ice Station Zebra," an espionage thriller starring Rock Hudson that released to mixed reviews and a middling box office performance. If the Academy had some sort of grudge against Kubrick, as some fans of his suspect, they still couldn't deny that "A Space Odyssey" deserved the win here; even more than half a century later, the movie looks fantastic. What must've sealed the movie's win in this category

Ehsan Khoshbakht on Locarno’s Columbia Retrospective ‘The Lady With the Torch’: ‘This Film Will Never Play Again in My Lifetime’

The Locarno Film Festival is justly renowned for its retrospectives, and this year is no exception. But rather than an individual director or star, this edition is dedicated to a studio: Columbia Pictures with “The Lady with the Torch” celebrating the studio’s centenary. With 44 films from well-known titles such as Orson Welles’s “The Lady from Shanghai” (1947) and Fritz Lang’s “The Big Heat” (1953) to more obscure gems like Frank Borzage’s “Man’s Castle” (1933) and Earl McEvoy’s “The Killer that Stalked New York” (1950), curator Ehsan Khoshbakht has created what he calls an “unofficial history” of the studio in its heyday, as controversial president Harry Cohn dragged Columbia from poverty row to Academy success. Variety sat down to speak with Khoshbakht (who is also the co-director of Bologna’s Cinema Ritrovato Festival) about the retrospective. Variety: What role does the retrospective play in Locarno? Khoshbakht: Very recently, I was

“I can’t understand why he doesn’t want to direct films anymore”: Stanley Kubrick Had Every Reason to be Furious at George Lucas

If the Star Wars franchise is considered one of the greatest film series of all time in Hollywood, the credit goes to its creative mastermind George Lucas. The visionary director pioneered a sci-fi revolution with the epic space saga that spanned multiple decades to become a cult classic that will continue to remain evergreen for years to come. Hollywood filmmaker George Lucas (image credit: Joey Gannon/Wikimedia Commons) Lucas’ genius was also appreciated by his illustrious peers, including Stanley Kubrick, who is widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of his time. The Eyes Wide Shut director was also honest about the Star Wars director’s full-time foray into becoming a producer, and believed that he should have continued to direct more films. Stanley Kubrick Had These Words Of Advice For George Lucas George Lucas has succeeded in carving a historic legacy in Hollywood with his pioneering Star Wars franchise

Director Stanley Kubrick Wrote Three Movies That Were Never Released To The Public

The most notorious unmade Stanley Kubrick project is probably his "Napoleon," a massive biopic that the director infamously researched for years. In 2012, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art hosted a Kubrick exhibit, and guests were permitted to see Kubrick's filing cabinet where he stored thousands of hand-written notecards, each one detailing a single day in Napoleon Bonaparte's life. Kubrick worked on "Napoleon" in the 1970s, and claimed he wanted Jack Nicholson to play the part. Kubrick wrote a screenplay, secured filming locations in Romania, and was all ready to go. The 1970 film "Waterloo" bombed, however, and the then-recent film version of "War and Peace" threatened to flood the market with too much Napoleon. A lot of Kubrick's "Napoleon" research went into the production of 1975's "Barry Lyndon." Kubrick's unrealized projects are plentiful. Audiences may also know all about Kubrick's plans to make "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence" near the end of his life,
