Elsa Aguirre, star of Mexico’s Golden Age cinema, dies at 95 — more than the face the studios cast

The obituaries reach, almost in unison, for the same word: face. Elsa Aguirre, who has died, is being mourned across Mexico as one of the last living faces of the country’s Golden Age of cinema — and the phrase, meant as pure tribute, quietly repeats the very terms on which her era first hired her. The mid-century mythology of Mexican film was built around women it photographed far more often than it wrote for. Aguirre arrived at the studios the way that system preferred its women to arrive — not from the stage, a company or a drama school, but from a beauty contest, spotted as a teenager by a production

One Of John Wayne's Biggest Box Office Flops Was A Ridiculous Historical Adventure Movie

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. Today, studios are kneecapping themselves with irresponsible budgets. But Hollywood has been overspending on projects long before the days of $300 million movies. Just look at "The Conqueror," an absolute disaster of a film that saw John Wayne play the Mongol leader Temujin, better known as Genghis Khan. Yes, the Duke played Genghis Khan in Dick Powell's 1956 historical epic, which remains one of his biggest blunders, despite being the 11th-highest-grossing film of that year. How could a movie that seemingly enjoyed a solid return at the box office be considered a disaster? Well, it goes well beyond the shoddiness of the film itself,

John Wayne And John Ford Teamed Up For An Underrated Christmas Western

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. If you're looking for a less traditional Christmas movie this year because you've already watched "Elf" and "It's a Wonderful Life" a thousand times each, you might want to try an acclaimed but oft-forgotten Western directed by American icon John Ford and starring Western icon John Wayne. Written by Laurence Stallings and Frank S. Nugent, "3 Godfathers" stars Wayne as Robert "Bob" Marmaduke Hightower, a rustler (or rampant cattle thief) who traverses the wild West with Pedro Encarnación Arango y Roca Fuerte, or just "Pete" (Pedro Armendáriz), and their cohort William Kearney, also known as the "Abilene Kid" (Harry Carey Jr.

And Just Like That… Mario Cantone Is Spending Summer Under the Stars at TCM

And just like that… it’s August again — the last gasp of vacations, the first days of school, the long, treacherous hiatuses of our favorite talk shows, and a Turner Classic Movies tradition like no other. Starting August 1, TCM — which was recently seemingly saved by WB head David Zaslav — will once again highlight 31 stars across 31 days for Summer Under the Stars. The event has recurred annually since 2003, and this year, blended into usual mix of starry icons of legends past, are names like Mexican-American actor Pedro Armendáriz, iconic character journeyman James Gleason, and Italian sex symbol Gina Lollobrigida. Perhaps the real coup this year, however, are weekly appearances of “And Just Like That…” star Mario Cantone, who will join for not one… not two… but four nights of programming — once weekly — for four of his absolute favorites. Cantone has become a reliable presence at TCM, headlining the October series Creepy

The Worst John Wayne Movie, According To Letterboxd Users

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. Nothing about Dick Powell's 1956 historical epic "The Conqueror" went right. Firstly, and most obviously, the casting was horrid. John Wayne, America's racist uncle, was cast as Temujin, a.k.a. Genghis Khan, ruler of the Mongol Empire in the 12th century. His wife, Börte, was played by Susan Hayward. Other white actors playing Asian characters included Agnes Moorehead, William Conrad, and Lee Van Cleef. Additionally, the production was immensely troubled. "The Conqueror" was filmed partly in the desert outside of St. George, Utah, and production was slowed by an unexpected flash flood. According to the book "The Fifty Worst Films of All Time" by Michael Medved, Harry Medved, and Randy Dreyfuss, Wayne was frequently drunk on set, inspiring his co-stars to match his drunken energy with silly, untethered performances of their own. The film's writer, Oscar Millard, however, said
