Dr. McCoy Actor DeForest Kelley Reportedly Pitched A Star Trek Movie Based On A '60s Western

Prior to his gig on "Star Trek" in 1966, actor DeForest Kelley had a rather healthy career playing heavies and cowboys in some of the hottest Westerns of his day. Kelley's TV career was massively prolific in the 1940s and 1950s, and he spent his time playing supporting roles in multiple episodes of every popular TV Western of the era. He was in "The Lone Ranger," "Gunsmoke," "Boots and Saddles," "Bonanza," "Have Gun — Will Travel," "The Virginian," and many more. Kelley also starred in sitcoms, mainstream dramas, anthology shows ... anything, really. Prior to playing Dr. McCoy on Gene Roddenberry's popular series, Kelley was one of those reliable character

Steven Spielberg | Before Poltergeist and Jaws there was Something Evil

Airing in 1972, and seldom discussed since, Steven Spielberg’s Something Evil anticipated a decade of haunted house horror films. First showing as ABC’s movie of the week in November 1971, Duel immediately announced Steven Spielberg as a major new filmmaking talent. Where so many shot-for-tv thrillers of the period were flimsily made and disposable, Duel felt tense and cinematic. About a mild-mannered salesman pursued by an unseen, maniacal truck driver, it was a disturbing, white-knuckle masterpiece of economic direction. Decades later, it’s still being watched, studied and written about (not least on this site). Nine weeks later, in January 1972, another Spielberg-directed, made-for-tv genre piece aired – this time made for CBS.

The Best Romantic Movies of All Time

Some of the most beloved films in the world are from the romance genre, and over the years, it has reached incredible highs with films like Casablanca and Titanic. However, the last decade has been a low point for fans of the genre. While romance films have found new life on streaming platforms, the genre has never quite regained the heights it once reached. That’s why we decided to compile a list of the best romantic movies of all time,

Burt Lancaster's Must-Watch Revisionist Western Is Streaming On Netflix

For most of his career, Richard Brooks was a very serious director of prestige pictures, which worked out well for him during the prime of his career. Between 1955 and 1967, Brooks earned eight Academy Award nominations for films as varied as the juvenile delinquent drama "Blackboard Jungle," the Elizabeth Taylor-led adaptation of Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," the holy roller drama "Elmer Gantry" (for which Brooks won Best Adapted Screenplay), the revisionist Western "The Professionals" and the emotionally shattering adaptation of Truman Capote's true-crime classic "In Cold Blood." Of those titles, "The Professionals" stands out because it's actually fun. Based on the novel "A Mule for the Marquesa" by Frank O'Rourke,

The Screen Actors Guild Has a Storied History. Why Edit It Out of the Awards Show Name?

On February 25, 1995, NBC telecast the inaugural presentation of what would become an annual ritual, the conferral of awards by the Screen Actors Guild, with the honorees from both the film and television screens chosen by the group’s 77,615 members. “For the first time, the people who are in the trenches and make their living as performers will have a chance to express their appreciation for the outstanding work of their colleagues,” exulted SAG president Barry Gordon. SAG was late in jumping onto the awards bandwagon. The Screen Writers Guild had been giving out trophies since 1949, when among the winners were John Huston and B. Traven for best written American Western for The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The Directors Guild of America also began presenting annual awards in 1949, when Joseph L. Mankiewicz won for A Letter to Three Wives. “We are the most modest and self-effacing guild,” explained Patrick Stewart with a straight face.
