‘Jupiter’ Review: A Claustrophobic Study of a Nuclear-Escalation Nightmare That Feels Too Small for the Big Screen

Fictional French President Paul Archambault, as played with gimlet-eyed resolve by Denis Menochet in Alexandre Smia’s “Jupiter” is, we’re cued to believe, a good man. Thrust suddenly into a lurching nuclear crisis, he gathers ministers and advisers around him and listens intently to their staunchly opposing views on escalation vs appeasement. They are also good men and good women, cleaving to the same basic humanist principles, while disagreeing volubly on how to put them into practise. Smia’s film takes a more solemn, less kinetic approach than Kathryn Bigelow’s similarly themed “A House Of Dynamite” but shares its tacit, strangely idealistic faith that the people tasked with thinking through the unthinkable in the event of a nuclear threat, will be dedicated public servants of intelligence and integrity. Jupiter Review: Nuclear Deterrence Becomes a Pressure Chamber

France’s nuclear doctrine leaves one person with the final word, and Jupiter builds its entire structure around that bottleneck. Alexandre Smia’s feature debut, co-written with Thomas Finkielkraut, takes the machinery of nuclear deterrence and strips away nearly everything except the individual expected to make it function. That individual is Paul Archambault, played by Denis Ménochet, who has barely assumed the French presidency when an assassination attempt against Russian president Chernov is blamed on Ukraine. The accusation immediately destabilizes an already fragile ceasefire. Chernov threatens retaliation, Ukraine asks France to stand firm, and Archambault is pulled toward PC Jupiter, the secure bunker beneath the Élysée Palace where France’s gravest military decisions are made.

Reda Kateb plays the forger who made the Banque de France tremble in ‘The Money Maker’

There is a strain of French cinema that regards the criminal less as a problem to be solved than as a craftsman to be studied, and Jean-Paul Salomé’s new film settles comfortably into that tradition. Its subject is a forger, a Polish engineer washed up in France who discovered that his hands could turn out banknotes more convincing than the ones the state itself printed. The film is not, in the end, interested in the crime. It is interested in the paradox at its centre: a man whose masterpiece could never be signed, whose only true admirers were the police assigned to end him. The story is real, or close enough to be unnerving.

New York’s Rendez-Vous With French Cinema Festival Unveils 2026 Lineup, Including ‘The Stranger’ and ‘Alpha’ (Exclusive)

The 31st edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, a New York festival co-organized by promotion org Unifrance and Film at Lincoln Center, has unveiled its 22-title lineup which will kick off with François Ozon’s “The Stranger” on March 5.
