Why watch this film?

Think of a cheesy, outdated movie. Now add a whiff of mothballs and throw in characters we've seen in dozens of other stories. Voila! You have the recipe for 'Tooth for Tooth', a 2021 Brazilian film that looks like it came straight out of an 1980s detective comic book. In the plot, we meet Ademar (Juliano Cazarré, from 'Boi Neon'), one of the owners of a security company who discovers his partner murdered in a hotel. From there, alongside his former work partner's wife (Paolla Oliveira), he begins a hunt to better understand the schemes his partner was getting into. There is absolutely no originality in this script by Arthur Warren (from the pleasant 'Haunted Comics: The Movie'). It's as if it were any story by Rubem Fonseca if Rubem Fonseca didn't have talent. The pedantic and repetitive voice-over, the predictable twists, the artificial tone of the story, the stiff performances... Everything works against the movie. Whoever wants a vigorous police story will undoubtedly be disappointed. And 'Tooth for Tooth' should only pass as any entertainment, pleasing only those who want to return to the essence of investigative films from other times.
