Chocolat

A son of slaves becomes the first black circus artist in France, facing racial struggles.

Why watch this film?

With many "poetic licenses", 'Chocolat' is a biographical drama about someone born as the son of slaves in Cuba at the end of the 19th century, who eventually became the first circus artist of France and one of its greatest successes, before a tragic (and fictitious) decline. Regardless of its historical fidelity, the film is a powerful drama that, on the one hand, raises questions about race relations and their representation in entertainment; on the other, it is supported by the chemistry on screen between its two stars and, particularly, by Omar Sy, who earned his second César Award nomination for this performance after the iconic 'Untouchables'.
