Why watch the movie The Summer Book?
"The Summer Book is a sensitive, contemplative drama directed by Charlie McDowell (The One I Love) that adapts Tove Jansson’s classic novel (Sommarboken) — with Jansson herself co-writing the screenplay alongside Robert Jones. The film explores the relationship between Sophia (newcomer Emily Matthews) and her grandmother (Oscar nominee Glenn Close), with her father played by Anders Danielsen Lie (The Worst Person in the World). The serene beauty of the island in the Gulf of Finland becomes a character of its own, while McDowell’s direction — approved by Jansson’s family — grounds the story in poetic silences and natural atmospheres that echo themes of grief, time, and intergenerational bonds. Close’s understated, deeply felt performance has earned particular praise, and the movie premiered at the 2024 BFI London Film Festival. As a beloved literary adaptation, fans of Jansson’s book will be moved by how faithfully and tenderly her minimalist prose is brought to the screen."
