Why watch this film?

Officially released at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival (though also selected later for the unfortunately cancelled Cannes Film Festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic), this film from director Francis Lee ('God's Own Country') drew, at the time, unfavorable comparisons to 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' due to its similar themes and locations. It must be said, 'Ammonite' is a less polished period drama than its cited reference, executed with a certain distance that makes it seem very cold in spite of its theme, about an older and lonely woman (Kate Winslet, from 'Titanic'), known for her talent in finding ammonites -- which are fossilized mollusks hidden inside stones -- who gets involved with a younger bourgeois girl (Saoirse Ronan, from 'Little Women'). The production design is impeccable, and something worth noting are the protagonists Winslet and Ronan.
