Why watch this film?

"Murina" is an incredibly powerful movie, one of the most interesting of the 2021 Toronto Film Festival. Directed by first-time feature filmmaker Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic, the production hides behind a coming-of-age story to be so much more -- a potent family drama. The story revolves around a 17-year-old girl (Gracija Filipovic) who sees a new world of possibilities when a friend (Cliff Curtis) of her father arrives on the island where they live, near the coast of Italy. In addition to a platonic love affair, with all the aesthetics of a 'Call Me By Your Name', the feature film mainly shows this teenager envisioning a world in which she can study in good schools, go to college and get out of her father's shadow. It's a beautiful coming-of-age movie that, deep down, holds the story of a young woman who wants to forge her own path. Highlight for the powerful performance of Filipovic, also debutant, and for Curtis ('Memory Paths'), who does well as a gallant type. Oh, and detail: in the production, in addition to Martin Scorsese, there is also Brazilian Rodrigo Teixeira, from RT Features.
