Garota da Moto

Derived from the series aired by SBT and Amazon Prime Video, 'Garota da Moto' is another example of how action cinema in Brazil can still find its place. The feature film, directed by Luis Pinheiro (of the fun 'Mulheres Alteradas'), tells the story of Joana (Maria Casadevall, taking the place of Chris Ubach), a motogirl who, during her work, crosses with a gang of slave labor. She makes her own justice. From then on, she becomes the target of criminals, mainly of a man who seems to have control of organized crime in São Paulo - and, despite the exaggerations of the character, is well interpreted by Roberto Birindelli. From then on, the classic "cat and mouse" begins. It is, thus, a film of good intentions that, after the series, gives more strength and autonomy to the character of Casadevall. She goes after revenge and makes her own justice. With this, the feature film has gains and losses. It gains, first of all, by strengthening the character and making her go beyond a simple fight with another woman - and, look, caused by a man. However, on the other hand, this change of attitude requires sharper script and direction to make this character more credible and natural. And that simply does not happen. While the good 'O Doutrinador' embraces the fantastic, to speak of another Brazilian film of an avenger, 'Garota da Moto' takes itself too seriously. The character loses the opportunity to evolve, mainly with a mechanical performance of Casadevall. And the story gets stiff and very unbelievable, with very unnatural situations. Still, the action works in Pinheiro's hands, who manages to give rhythm and strength to the plot. Could it be better? No doubt. But it's a good way for national "genre" cinema to find its own voice and space more and more.
