Why watch this film?
The debut of Lin-Manuel Miranda as a movie director obviously had to be in a musical - and a very meaningful one, telling the story of the man who revolutionized Broadway. 'tick, tick...Boom!' follows the life of Jonathan Larson days before he turns 30. His dream was to one day be recognized for his work, 'Superbia', a futuristic rock version of George Orwell's book '1984'. Larson spent seven years writing and, at the time the movie takes place, he finally finishes what he imagined to be his masterpiece. The production strays away from the Hollywood standard and leaves the playful side aside, focusing on a more modest and realistic story - after all, it has a biographical background. The format catches attention: at some moments it's a play and at others it's a linear movie. Surprisingly, this works very well and gives a new face to musicals. Lin-Manuel Miranda does an excellent job here, very sensitive, beautiful and delicate. Andrew Garfield, who plays the protagonist, is simply impeccable and deserves to be recognized during the awards season.
