Why watch this film?

Directed by Claudia Pinheiro ('Clara', 'Disturbance'), and inspired by a homonymous theater play, 'The Ball of Yarn' starts with metaphors right in the title. A ball of yarn, after all, is a tangle of threads, tangled up in an incoherent form. Little by little, however, we give points, undoing this mess. Over time, the knots come undone. And the union becomes clearer. That's exactly what the feature film is about. At the beginning, we know the form of the movie: some brothers scattered around the world, each with their own problems and challenges. Little by little, however, we understand their path and, above all, where these five are heading. In a melodrama style, reminiscent of stories already seen in soap operas or television series, 'The Ball of Yarn' brings interesting aspects and reflections on the role of man in the contemporary world. It may seem outdated at this moment when women's discussions are coming to the fore, but Claudia Pinheiro goes beyond the subject. She talks about toxic masculinity, parental absence and even the pressure of society on male sexuality. It's a tangle of stories and thoughts, just like a ball of yarn, but it forms something meaningful in the end while they wait in the hospital for the answer if a man in a coma is the missing father of the quintet. Absolute highlight for the strong and emotional performance of Nando Cunha, the link that connects all these characters and stories.

Plot summary

'Knitting' is the story of five brothers abandoned in childhood by their father. Given the death of their mother years later, the brothers end up being raised by the older brother. In adulthood one day they receive the news that an elderly man has been found beaten and is in a coma in an ICU. In the waiting room of the Hospital, the brothers immerse themselves in their conflicts and memories and, through knitting, learned in childhood.
