The Forgotten

A teacher and student fall in love during the pro-Russian occupation of Luhansk.

Why watch this film?

Movies about wartime romances are nothing new and, in fact, are perhaps one of Hollywood's favorite themes: there are examples from 'Casablanca' to 'Pearl Harbor' and 'The English Patient'. 'Los olvidados' is a Ukrainian production set in the context of the pro-Russian protests in the country in 2014, and follows a teacher and a teenage rebel who fall in love and join the resistance to fight for freedom in the region. It is a sober toned movie that, instead of idealizing the romantic relationship between its protagonists (uncomfortable due to the age gap), opts to focus more on the realism and tension of the situation. Ideal for those who want to become familiar with these relatively recent events between Ukraine and Russia from a fictional perspective, but without losing sight.
