Why watch this film?

Awarded at film festivals such as Locarno and Mar del Plata, 'Vitalina Varela' is a film by Portuguese director Pedro Costa that revisits the story of the actress/character of the same name, who appeared in his previous production, 'Cavalo Dinheiro'. Here, Varela plays a fictional version of herself, narrating her story with her husband who went to Portugal in search of work and, when she was able to travel to join him, arrived three days after his funeral. Beautifully photographed like a dream turned into a painting, the film explores the reality-based stories of its actress (awarded at Locarno) of love, migration and disappointment, in a remarkable collaborative synergy between star and director.
