Why watch this film?

Selected at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, 'Beauty' is a 1980s-set drama about a young artist's journey to fame, with a screenplay by Lena Waithe ('Master of None'). The protagonist (Gracie Marie Bradley) is a young black woman whose talent promises her a great future, and everything seems to be going well when a record label offers her a lucrative contract. However, the girl must find a balance between what she wants, her father's (Giancarlo Esposito) ambitions, her relationship with another woman (Aleyse Shannon), and her public life. Though its characters are somewhat archetypal, 'Beauty' is interesting because it manages to explore the greed, manipulation, and internal repression of the music industry, with great performances from a cast that also includes names like Sharon Stone ('Casino') and Niecy Nash ('Selma').
