The Nile Hilton Incident
Imagine a political thriller in the intense Hollywood tradition like 'Three Days of the Condor' or 'Snowden', but taken to a social context rarely explored from within by Western cinema, generally limited to a supposed heroism as seen in 'Argo'. The result is 'Crimen en El Cairo' ('The Nile Hilton Incident'), from Swedish director of Egyptian origin, Tarik Saleh ('Metropía), awarded at the Sundance Film Festival 2017. With a story partially inspired by the murder of the Lebanese singer Suzanne Tamim in Dubai, the film takes place weeks before the 2011 Egyptian revolution, in the midst of the social and political agitation of the Arab Spring (between 2010 and 2012). It is an exciting exploration of corruption, guilt, and rage that has plagued Muslim nations of Africa.

The Contractor
With Chris Pine ('Star Trek') headlining the cast, 'The Contractor' is an action movie at its core, following all the conventions of the genre with shooting, fighting and explosions. However, the plot, which is about a military man who is removed from the marines and then joins a paramilitary organization to support his family in the only way he knows, hits the mark by bringing up controversial points and provoking the viewer, going beyond the obvious and preventing the movie from being just another generic action production, pleasing a wider audience. It's worth keeping an eye on director Tarik Saleh ('Metropia'), who doesn't settle for filming scenes in a banal way, looking for inventive and daring means.

The Peasants
The Peasants is an animated film by the same directors of Loving Vincent, using the same innovative technique, which could be described as "oil-painted rotoscopy". Based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel The Peasants (1904) by Władysław Reymont, it's a tale of desire and revenge told in four episodes, one for each season of the year. The story, set in Poland at the turn of the 20th century, follows a young peasant woman who wreaks havoc by marrying an older, wealthy man, whose son also desires her, despite being married. It is a powerful and bleak, although conventional tale about violence and misogyny, somewhat overshadowed by its beautiful and prodigious visual execution.
